The nature of Kyrgyzstan is a paradise for hikers, horse riders, trekking enthusiasts and jeep safari lovers. Here you can find out more about the breathtaking landscape, climate and numerous activities that make Kyrgyzstan a dream destination for nature lovers.

Nature and landscape

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country, with over 90 % of its territory covered by mountains. The two most important mountain ranges are the Tian Shan and the Pamir. The Tian Shan, whose name means “Heavenly Mountains”, is known for its snow-capped peaks, deep valleys and alpine meadows. The Pamir, in the south of the country, impresses with its rugged landscapes and high-altitude plateaus.

Lake Issyk-Kul, the second largest mountain lake in the world, is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most famous natural wonders. This salty lake lies at an altitude of 1,600 meters and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Its clear, blue waters and the surrounding landscape offer numerous leisure opportunities.

In addition to Lake Issyk-Kul, there are many other lakes, rivers and waterfalls that criss-cross the country and provide habitats for a variety of animal and plant species. The forests and meadows are home to wild animals such as snow leopards, Marco Polo sheep and ibex.

Climate

The climate in Kyrgyzstan is strongly continental, characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Summers can be very hot at lower altitudes, while winter temperatures drop sharply. In the mountainous regions, summers are pleasantly cool and winters often bring plenty of snow, making the country an attractive destination for winter sports.

Spring and fall are the best times to travel for outdoor activities, as the weather is mild and the landscape is particularly attractive. In spring, the meadows and valleys bloom in vibrant colors, while autumn transforms the forests into a magnificent play of colors.
