Founded in the 11th century, the Burana tower was the minaret of a mosque in the city of Balasagun, the capital of the once largest empire – Khara-Khanid Khanate of local Turkic-speaking tribes in Central Asia. While except of the tower none of the original city stands above ground today, there is a museum onsite that explains the history of this important site and showcases some of the archaeological discoveries. Take a tour of the ruins in the surrounding hills and then visit the top of the tower with a view of Chui Valley.
Your journey then takes you to the pride of all of Central Asia – Lake Ysyk-Kol . Your route first takes you to the Boom Canyon, which consists of red sandstone formations. This stretches along the northern shore of Lake Ysyk-Kol. The entire region around Lake Ysyk-Kol is not only a recreational area, but also a nature reserve. This “hot lake” does not freeze even at winter temperatures of -20 °C and is home to four endemic fish species, among others. Archaeologists discovered a 2500-year-old city on the bottom of the lake; the water level was much lower in the past. You will then visit Cholpon-Ata, where you can take a closer look at some fascinating rock paintings. You will also visit a local history museum on Lake Issyk-Kul, which will tell you more about the people and their life on the lake. Overnight stay in Cholpon-Ata
